Office Post-Epidural Instructions
Following your epidural steroid injection in the office:
  1. You may drive yourself home.  However, some patients may prefer to have someone else bring them to and from their appointment.
  1.  Lie down for two hours on your back or painful side as soon as you return home.
  1. Remove the Band-Aid from your injection site when bleeding stops.  Do not leave the Band-Aid on more than 24 hours as it may irritate your skin.
  1. Continue to take your medications as prescribed. You may apply an ice pack to the injection site for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off to reduce discomfort.
  1. Common side effects from steroid injections include:
    1. Flushing or feeling of warmth
    2. Increased water retention
    3. Leg cramps
    4. Increase in appetite
    5. Increase in blood glucose levels.  Note:  If you are diabetic, you should monitor your blood sugar levels closely.

*These side effects are to be expected and should not be cause for concern.

  1. If you experience any of the following symptoms within 48 hours after today's procedure, call the office at (877) 87DRJIM.
    1. Redness, swelling, and/or drainage at the injection site
    2. Fever above 100 degrees and/or chills
    3. Severe headache
    4. An increase in numbness and tingling in arms or legs
