Office Post-Epidural Instructions

Following your epidural steroid injection in the office:

  • You may drive yourself home. However, some patients may prefer to have someone else bring them to and from their appointment.
  • Lie down for two hours on your back or painful side as soon as you return home.
  • Remove the Band-Aid from your injection site when bleeding stops. Do not leave the Band-Aid on more than 24 hours as it may irritate your skin.
  • Continue to take your medications as prescribed. You may apply an ice pack to the injection site for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off to reduce discomfort.
  • Common side effects* from steroid injections include:
    • Flushing or feeling of warmth
    • Increased water retention
    • Leg cramps
    • Increase in appetite
    • Increase in blood glucose levels. Note: If you are diabetic, you should monitor your blood sugar levels closely.
  • If you experience any of the following symptoms within 48 hours after today's procedure, call the office at (877) 87DRJIM.
    • Redness, swelling, and/or drainage at the injection site
    • Fever above 100 degrees and/or chills
    • Severe headache
    • An increase in numbness and tingling in arms or legs
